About
Welcome! I am an assistant professor of politics at Pomona College and a nonresident fellow at the Harvard Kennedy School Ash Center for Democratic Governance and Innovation. I also served as a commissioner on the 2020 Citizens Redistricting Commission for the state of California, which successfully redrew district lines for Congress, the state legislature and the board of equalization.
My research examines voting behavior, elections, voting rights, public opinion, public policy, and interest groups, with an emphasis on the representation of racial, ethnic and immigrant communities, and has been published in peer-reviewed journals such as the Journal of Politics, Political Behavior, Political Research Quarterly, Journal of Women, Politics & Policy, Politics, Groups and Identities, and Perspectives on Politics.
My analysis of politics and elections has been featured in The Washington Post, The New York Times, CNN, NPR, Bloomberg, Politico, The Guardian, Vox, The Los Angeles Times, NBC News, The HuffPost and many more. In a voting rights case before the California Supreme Court, I coauthored an amicus brief that summarizes empirical research on the benefits of maximizing the voting strength of historically excluded communities.
In the classroom, I strive to create a welcoming learning environment where students can draw upon social science research and theory to discuss the pressing issues we face today.
I earned my doctorate in political science from the University of Southern California. My dissertation project identified variations in voting behavior between Asian Americans and Latinos and I was the recipient of the Haynes-Lindley Doctoral Dissertation Fellowship from the John Randolph and Dora Haynes Foundation.
I hold appointments as a senior researcher at AAPI Data, a member of the executive council for the Western Political Science Association, and a faculty fellow at the USC Schwarzenegger Institute for State and Global Policy. I was a visiting scholar at Stanford University’s Bill Lane Center for the American West and the recipient of the 2023 Emerging Scholar Award from the American Political Science Association’s Civic Engagment Section.
