Does it make sense to have Iowa be the first primary contest given that its demographic and economic profile is very different from the national electorate?
Certainly not for Democrats. The Democratic Party has large contingents of African Americans, Latinos and increasingly Asian Americans, many of whom live in urban areas. Being a state that is 90 percent white, with large rural areas, simply doesn’t make Iowa representative of the diversity of the party.
That being said, Iowans seem to take seriously their “first-in-the-nation” status by becoming active and well informed early on.
